Sometimes you want to be able to use the whole page without the side bars (images & widgets) on the right hand side. This happen to me after installing the SimplePress forum plugin. The editor whould always be partly covered up by the side bars, which is rather annoying when entering text. After a bit of mucking around I found the anwser and it is to edit the page in question and change theTemplate setting from Default Template to no sidebars a whola for this page there are no sidebars any more.

I have installed the base version for my CRW on my local server instead of always doing all updates on the web. The strange thing that happened after the local install and perdorming all update is that permalinks just did not want to work Turns out that the Xampp server I’m using by default hasAllowOverride disabled:

<Directory />
Options FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride None
Order deny,allow
Deny from all
</Directory>

This can be found on yout Linux machine at /opt/lampp/etc/http.conf file

All you need to do to fix it is to change to: AllowOverride all

restart your xampp server and all should be cool.

When I create a mindmap for a new website to setup I like to indicate against each topic what this will represent in WordPress, eg is it a category, a page, a plugin etc. I have fond that the best way of doing this in Xmind is to assign a marker to each topic together with a legend for the marker say ahat they represent. How to size your images in WordPress when using the Thesis theme to make it fit neatly into the left-hand column and how to link to a larger image where required.

Sometimes when you add an image to your content it will overlap with your widgets or your picture box to the right. To avoid this from happening its best to make the max width of your image 475 pixels or less. You can of course resize any image using the HTML image code (when editing the post click HTML at the top and then find the (read the {} as <> since if I use proper HTML code WordPress will try to use it as regular HTML code):
{img src=”http://yourdomain.com…” alt=”my special picture” width=”800″ /}

and change the width=”" attribute to 475 however this has to negative effects, first it might distort your image and second the full size image still needs to be loaded. The better approach is to resize the image using an image manipulation software such as GIMP, see my resource page for details here.

If by reducing your image you lose to much detail then upload both images to your server, display the smaller version in your post and link the smaller version to the larger one using this code:

This post is an update to an earlier one on the same subject. After having moved a few wordpress blogs I think this one is easier to follow.

The following post describes in detail how to move your WordPress blog to a new domain in 5 steps without losing any content or have ing to retype or copy and paste any content.

Please note that all instructions here are assuming that you have cpanel access to your server and that its a fresh installation (read all files on your server will be overwritten)

1. Install Wordpress on the new domain
   cpanel > fantastico > Wordpress blog (I’m assuming install into your root folder)
2. Copy only these folders from your old domain to your new domain: wp-admin, wp-content, wp-includes plus any folders you might have created your self such as reports, images etc. by creating a zip file or using FTP. To create a zip file cpanel > file manager > tick the folders > top menu Compress
3. Copy old database and paste to the new database
   old database: cpanel > phpmyadmin > chose your database (_wpdp1) > Export > see pic below (Click above to see larger version)
   

   MySQL Export Setttings

   Copy the resulting SQL code to the clip board and then:
   cpanel > phpmyadmin > chose your database (_wpdp1) > click SQL tab and paste (you should now see the SQL code from the previous step) > GO

4. Update the database with you new domain name.
   Goto new database cpanel > phpmyadmin > chose your database (_wpdp1) > SQL tab
   issue these actions one at a time (copy and paste into the SQL window and change domain names then click GO), please note that some systems will want single ‘ and others double ” around the domain name, if one fails try the other:
   UPDATE wp_options SET option_value = ‘http://www.new-domain.com’ WHERE option_name = ‘home’ OR option_name = ’siteurl’;
   UPDATE wp_posts SET guid = replace(guid, “http://www.old-domain.com”,”http://www.new-domain.com”);
   UPDATE wp_posts SET post_content = replace(post_content, “http://www.old-domain.com”, “http://www.new-domain.com”);
   Plesase note that the URL in the above 3 commands needs to be with or without www depending on how you use you domain name, if uncertain then run the with and without the www.
   UPDATE wp_options SET option_value = ‘/your-absolute path/wp-content/uploads”) WHERE option_name = ‘upload_path’
   Example for your path: /home/handsonim/public_html. After you have completed this I would recommend to browse the table wp_options (using phpmyadmin) and just check if there are any other values that might need changing.
5. Update forwarders
   First test that your new site is working then forward your old domain name to your new domain to ensure people still find your site cpanel > Redirects (after the >> enter http://yr-new-domain.com) and choose as a permanent forward since this will ensure that browsers update their bookmarks also.

Also make sure your new site will be indexed by Google.

This is just a fantastic plugin. One of the the really important things we need to know in our Internet Marketing efforts is what works and what doesn’t. The basic thing it does is to redirect from our custom URL to an external URL. Eg we might have a external URL http://secure.hosting.com/cgi-bin/affiliates/id=QWNERTY, which is our ugly affiliate link and it also tells the visitor aha he’s an affiliate. Pretty links now allow us to setup a custom URL http://yourdomain.com/hosting, cool isn’t it? So when someone clicks our custom link it redirect them via the external link to the relevant page and records their click in our database so we have a record of how many people clicked a certain link and we get some more info like what browser they were using their domain name etc. Pretty Links allows us to:

1. To have shorter URLs
   eg instead of http://yourdomain.com/yourcategory/article-name/ we can have http://yourdomain.com/rbt
   which is useful for Twitter or for promotions
2. Keep stats about clicks
3. Hides the external URLS and shows our custom URLs instead
4. We can group links to get combined stats for them
5. Market Samurai uses Pretty Links to integrate with WordPress
6. We can find out who we are sending traffic to and start talking to them to encourage them to send traffic to us

To be successful you will want to get into the blogging habit, which is “A POST A DAY”. Every working day without fail you need to make a post. Your aim of every post is that you use it together with a call to action to get people to read a sales page. So remember that your sales funnel is:

1. Write a post that attracts readers
2. Ask the visitor to read a sales page
3. Convince the visitor on your sales page to take the action you want them to take, eg to buy your widget.

You will also want to get into the habit of collecting relevant material for your posts. If you are like me you are reading all kinds mags online and off-line that are relevant to your target market. Whenever you come across something that interests you it’s also most likely that your blog readers will be interested. The trick is to gather this relevant information. Well since you now know the categories what you need to do is to create a manilla folder for each category and every time tou read something in a mag of interest rip it out and place in the relevant folder like wise create a folder for each category in your email client and copy relevant emails to it and of course have a folder per category in your documents folder on your PC. Not only is it painless to gather information but you ensure it’s relevant when you file it, because if it doesn’t fit into one of your categories then most likely it’s not relevant to your target market!

Because I can’t help myself but have to have things structured I have decide to start a personal blog so I can move all “of topic” posts there. It just doesn’t sit well with me that I have put stuff here that isn’t relevant to my target market.

Talking about generating traffic it reminds me of a article on sitepoint a little while ago where the author was proudly reporting an additional 10,000 unique visitors because he had posted something about a celebrity. When I started this blog a few months ago we had a big sand storm and I posted photos about it and emailed the link to a bunch of friends and my BudgetHandles customers. My idea being that this was a sneaky way of introducing my new website to them and some might be interested in my offer. And yes I got heaps of feedback and was sent plenty of photos of the dust strom in various parts of Australia but no not one person even took notice of my other content. And during discussions with some of the people you commented on my photos I said “What did you think about my new site?”. And the reply in most cases? “What new site?”. So the moral of the story is that it is no use just getting traffic for traffic sake, it needs to be relevant traffic. As often less is more. We want less but relevant traffic.

Anyhow back to creating my personal blog. One very important part of setting up your own website is that you need to research what you website is about (website objective) who your target market is and what categories and tags you will be using.
